Introduction to Web Publishing with WordPress

An introduction to publishing online content using a Web publishing system (WordPress).

Introduction to Web Publishing with WordPress is intended for anyone who is interested in running their own Web site to establish a online business presence or personal publishing using the open-source WordPress publishing software. The content of the course is technical, although this is not a programming course. In the course you'll learn how to set up, configure, and customize the WordPress software to a Web server. Using the skills you'll pick up in this course, you'll be able to run and customize your own copy of WordPress on any commodity Web server without having to deal with the limitations of someone else's hosting.

Course Outline

  • Deploying the WordPress.org software to a Web server
  • WordPress concepts (post, page, category, tag, RSS, dashboard, user accounts and permissions)
  • WordPress configuration and settings
  • Creating content. Basic HTML and CSS (positioning and links)
  • Working with images and other media
  • Anti-spam, the nofollow tag, comment moderation, and third-party comment systems
  • Installing and configuring widgets
  • Installing and enabling themes
  • Installing and enabling plugins
  • New features in Wordpress 3.0

Prerequisites

  • Basic personal computer skills.
  • A computer with a Web browser (any operating system).
  • No coding experience required (this is not a programming course).

Duration and Format

Four weeks. Taught online. Instructor-led.
